Storytime
I’m Suki and I grew up in a Caribbean household but my background is mixed Jamaican, Ghanaian and Sierra Leonean. About ten years ago I met my fiancée Johnny who is British-born Chinese and comes from a family of takeaway and restaurant owners.
Food being really important to both of us and both coming from rich food cultures it was natural that I would bring my food to his house and he would bring his food to mine. In a lot of ways, the idea of Hungry Buddhas came from the weekend meals we would throw together from the leftovers in our fridges.
Some combinations were better than others - veggie fried rice and oxtail for example, and from these combinations, the idea of combining the 2 cuisines began to form. I started making my own patties and learned to make Cantonese dumplings from Johnny’s mum and experimented with different fillings for both. The idea was growing.
Soon after, Johnny and I travel around Asia. I travelled through Hong Kong, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia and Sri Lanka eating everything in my path. Once I got back and started putting together all the pieces, Hungry Buddhas was born.
Today, Hungry Buddhas is a proudly Afro-Asian food business that merges 2 incredible cultures through food. My food is a reflection of my life, my family and my story and I want to share it with you!
